The Advanced Style Ladies are known for wearing bold accessories and wonderful hats. I think the pictures above are proof enough that hats are having their day in the sun. Which are your favorites?

Supporting the Special Olympics takes time and money.  And, I must admit I can't recall ever getting a solitication phone call from someone representing the special olympics.  They raise their money by volunteering in various ways.  And, some are even crazy enough to jump into a hole in a frozen lake.

Meet Mike:

 Meet Bill:

And, here they are pointing to the reason they were on the ice.  They had helped get the hole ready!

The stairs are for easy EXIT.

My sincere thanks to you both!

I only took one portrait of a pond hockey spectator.  Most people were with others or sidetracked trying to keep warm.  Even my fingers were cold.

I was heading back to the car when I cross paths with this woman.

Meet Miranda!

She is living in Minnesota for a while on an internship.   Originally from Colorado, she didn't seem to be minding the cold.

Thanks Miranda!

I am excited to report that our dear friend Tziporah Salamon just signed with Europe's leading modeling agency, Models 1. Tziporah happened to be in London during my panel discussion at The Royal Academy of Arts where she delivered the wonderful news. This has been a dream of Tziporah's for many years, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead for her. Check out Tziporah's portfolio on the Models 1 website HERE.

A few things you may want to know about pond hockey.

First, there is no glass.  So, spectators need to be a bit watchful.  Generally, the players aren't making slap shots of the buck.

Second, no checking!

Third, as you can see, the boards are about 18" high.  And, getting a shot was difficult.  They were FAST!

That's the goal!  No goalie!

That's just funny.

Thanks all!

Daphne Selfe in a suit from Old Ladies Rebellion
This past weekend, I joined 83-year-old model Daphne Selfe, designer Fanny Karst, and Nigel Hartley from St. Christopher's Hospice for a panel discussion at The Royal Academy of Arts in London. We had a very special conversation about the interplay between aging, illness, and physical appearance. Audience members joined in for a lively conversation reinforcing how creativity can positively influence one's mood and outlook. I was especially struck by a point made by Mr. Hartley that we must find ways to engage with communities of seniors who are often overlooked and not as vibrant as the men and women that I tend to photograph. My goal has always been to make older people as a whole more visible and valued in our society, so this topic is one that I hope to continue to address more completely in the future.

Minnesota sponors a huge pond hockey tournament during the winter.  It was quite a distance to drive.  But, the weather wasn't bad so I decided to give it a try.

In case you are wondering, I believe over 80 teams show up for 3 days of hockey on a frozen lake.

I believe they had 20 different rinks set up.

The temp was about 34.  But, it was dropping and the wind was gusting up to 40 mph.  It wasn't a lot of fun out on the ice.  But, I had a nice time getting a few photos.

I know, this isn't a single portrait.  Think of it as portraits of about 87 people all at once.

It is amazing to watch little kids be so gentle around babies.  They just seem to know how to be careful and loving.

The litte H was taking great care to love up the newest member to the party.

Here is a close up:

Welcome to the world, little one.  I hope my generation can make it a better place for all of you.

The Big D's parents have a lot of friends.  It has been my pleasure to meet some of them at family and social gatherings.

Meet Marisa.

She is a delightful and charming person, and a wonderful friend of the kids.   She is also quite willing to join you if you are having a little scotch and a cigar.  Now, that's the way to relax!

Thanks Marisa.  Lovely knowing you!

Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg in an original coat by Pierre Balmain
While in Stockholm, I had the honor of meeting and presenting Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg with an award, celebrating a lifetime of style, from M-Magasin. After the award ceremony Countess Marianne asked if Joyce and I would like to join her for a coffee at her home in Stockholm. Joyce and I were thrilled to receive this wonderful invitation and we joined Countess Marianne at her home the next day.

The Countess told me that she has loved fashion ever since she was a child. She explained that style is something that she feels one is born with and that, " A thing of beauty is a joy forever."(Keats) Now 88 years-old, she has acquired an incredible collection of couture items from friends like Pierre Balmain. Countess Marianne is in the process of lending some pieces from her collection, spanning over 50 years of couture, to a local museum, to be exhibited later this year. Joyce and will always remember our time in Stockholm and we can't wait to return to catch Countess Marianne's upcoming show.

Meet Roman:

I noticed him a few times as I was wandering the floor.  Yes, he is wearing red contacts.  He had a black hat that doesn't show very well.   But, with the tats, the piercings, the eyes, and the hat, I HAD to ask for a photo.

Thanks Roman!

Meet David:

He was walking around with a few people so I didn't know if I should bother him.  But, I could see his head, neck and arms and it was obvious he had a lot of tattoos.   I finally caught him when he was somewhat alone and asked if I could take his photo for the blog.

He didn't hesitate at all.

Then, he took his shirt of so I could see the rest of the work.

Dave is a retired high voltage cable splicer.  Not a job for the faint of heart.  A little needle work might have helped him relax.

Thanks Dave!

I met Lena  and Sybil during my visit to Forest Trace, and was instantly struck by their incredible energy. I was amazed to learn that they are both in their 100s and was curious to know what the  secret to their vitality was. Lena told me that in order to make it to 100 you have to be strong. She said" You have to be in love with life. Some people think that life may be coming to an end, but for me I am having so much fun. This is just the beginning." Sybil concurred and added, "Yes you have to have fun and never stop having fun."

I am finally in Seattle to celebrate a friend's wedding, after a few weeks of whirlwind travel. It's hard to explain how incredibly insightful and moving each of my trips has been. I am constantly meeting so many inspiring people, hearing their life stories, and it's difficult to process everything that is happening at the moment. On Tuesday I am off to London for a few days, and then back to New York for a few weeks, where I hope to write more in depth about these incredible experiences.

I met Ingmari Lamy in Stockholm and asked  her to share a few words about her experience as model  working in her 60s below.

When I came into modeling at the age of 19 and shortly after that did my first cover for Harpers Bazaar, I was a young woman loving nature and the world of fashion was art to me. Using make-up was great during the photo-shoot itself, the playfulness and the transforming possibilities. I loved it! Even so, I always took my make up off after work and was " a natural". That`s the way it was for me. Being in the world of fashion today, still modeling at the age of 65, I have kept these habits of staying natural. For my skin I use organic olive oil, that`s the way I like it. I want to inspire women, young and old, to know their true inner beauty and strength. I want them to know that their beauty is always there every moment. Always present. And then we can play with make-up and clothes! I love the way your women are colorful and expressing a true personality. Maybe when I get older I will be wearing make-up as well.

I caught the gentleman below on a morning news show that mentioned the tattoo convention.  I was hoping to cross paths with him.  And, I was delighted when I turned a corner and saw him at one of the booths.

Meet Enigma:

Here he is with Serana Rose, a designer for the Show Devils.

My sincere thanks to you both!  I must say, there is an entire sub-culture out there I know nothing about!

Meet Soap:

He was very busy unpacking boxes but was gracious enough to let me take his photo.  Getting him to smile was...a bit of a challenge.  To be fair, he was busy!

Thanks Soap for taking the time for a quick photo!

I had to stop and chuckle when I saw the woman below getting a tattoo. She was...not really enjoying it.

Meet Helen:

Initially she was grimacing. She opened her eyes as I watched her her face  while she was getting her tattoo, and she smiled.  I asked whether I could take her photograph the way she was looking just before she opened her eyes.

This is close!

Thanks Helen!
